Schibsted’s first Annual Editorial Report



For the first time Schibsted Media Group presents its Annual Editorial Report, focusing on the standards of journalism in our media houses.

The annual editorial report will contribute to increasing transparency in Schibsted Media Group’s editorial activities.

- We firmly believe that increased transparency in journalism and journalistic methods will strengthen both the credibility and the public trust in media. This report is an important step in that direction, CEO Rolv Erik Ryssdal says.

- Our goal is to establish internal ethical guidelines on journalistic methods and publishing in all our media houses, which are located in Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, France and Spain. We will also publish annual editorial reports from each media house, where the editors-in-chief will present a yearly state-of-the-union article, describing editorial goals, challenges and results during the past year, says Editor Bernt Olufsen in Schibsted Media Group, who’s in charge of the Editorial Report.

Secure independent news reporting and support democracy

The first issue of the annual editorial report is put together of information collected at the end of 2011, and the content is therefore somewhat limited. However, the intention is to further expand the fact sheet of each title in the 2012 report.

- We wish to focus more on our choice of sources, gender balance, editorial resources and payment to sources, Olufsen explains.

The fundamental framework of the 2011 Schibsted Editorial Report includes newspaper circulation, readership and online users. It also includes reports on topics such as editorial responsibility, place of issue and publishing frequency. Each media house has contributed with the total number of pages produced during the year and the ratio of editorial content versus advertisement.

- A clear mission for most of Schibsted’s Media Houses is to secure independent news reporting and support democracy, through the publishing of editorials, comments and debate articles. For this reason we have chosen to report on the quantity of this kind of content, says Bernt Olufsen.

Editors Forum

The editors of Schibsted’s media houses meet twice a year in the Schibsted Editors Forum, discussing common challenges and possible solutions. The aim is to constantly increase the quality and standards of journalism within the Group. The Schibsted Editors Forum also follows closely the developments of the digital media industry, discussing the need for special ethical guidelines in this field.

The idea of publishing an annual editorial report has been firmly supported by Schibsted Media Group’s Board of Directors.
